Bwindi Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the prime location in Africa for tracking gorillas.

Despite covering just 330 square kilometres, this rich rainforest environment contains with 120 mammal and 350 bird species. Most importantly it plays host to over half of the world's wild mountain gorillas, with around 320 individuals in 15 troops, of which almost half are habituated to humans.

Only around 20 gorilla tracking permits are issued each day, so you need to book extremely early and pay up front to secure a spot.

Most lodges are to the north, where Mantana Engagi Camp is probably the best mid-price option, whilst Clouds Gorilla Lodge to the south is the best upper end alternative.
