At almost 2000 square kilometres, Queen Elizabeth National Park is the largest and most accessible savanna reserve in Uganda.
This is classic Rift Valley scenery, with volcanic mountains, broad open plains pocked with craters, lakes, wetlands and forest. Since being annihiliated during the Amin era, game here in the park has made an incredible recovery, with the remarkable 95 mammal species almost all back up to full strength. Most notable are the elephant and lion populations and there are even chimpanzee hidden away in the Kyambura Gorge.
The best lodge inside the park is the southerly
Ishasha Wilderness Camp, whilst clustered around the southeast gate are
Katara Lodge,
Jacana Safari Lodge and the more pricey
Kyambura Gorge Lodge.
