The Bangweulu Swamp is a large and important wetland area in northcentral Zambia, as yet not gazetted as a national park and without significant tourism development. It therefore remains a very marginal and little visited location.
The main reason to journey here is the shoebill stork, a very strange-looking bird, for whom this area is a rare stronghold.
Nearby is the Livingstone Memorial, where the great man's heart was buried before his body was carried back to Zanzibar by his faithful retainers.
The only lodge here is the simple but interesting
Shoebill Island Camp.
