Azanzi Beach Resort
Azanzi resort was our first contact to zanzibar and it was a good choice. The location at the matemwe beach is perfect, endless beach to the left and to the right. From the restaurant you will enyoy a great view to the sea and mnemba at the left. By low tide it's a short walk (about 20 min.) to the reef top. You don't see any fish but a lot of sea urchines - be carefull.
The rooms are standing a little bit closely to each other. But try to get a room
in the upper floor and you will have a great view to the sea and the beach from your balcony.

Azanzi Beach Resort
Although I didn't stay there, I was staying at Matemwe Beach Village, I dropped in to have a look around.

As much as I liked Azanzi, it did have a modern resort feel to it. The obvious bonus which will have a big appeal to some people is, it has air conditioning.

You arrive at the main entrance after a short drive up a stone/gravel driveway. Firstly you notice its big thatched arches of a roof. It has a large open reception area, sofas, comfy cushions, shop and fountain in the middle. Also running through the middle of the lodge is a garden/jungle with various water features which is really pleasant.

The rooms are all really lovely, pleasant, large wooden double beds which are beautifully decorated, a chest at the bottom of the bed, mosquito drapes, comfy cushions all in beautiful rich vibrant colours. The bathrooms are clean and all very new, beautiful white robes, fluffy towels, deep bath, mosaic tile features and an outside private shower.

At the bottom of the bed are patio doors which take you out to a small private decking area with plunge pool, seats and table. Whilst nice, did seem rather cramped and on top of each other but not overlooked.

The rooms are located down each side of the lodge, along a wooden slatted path with the garden/jungle area in the middle. Although it did feel the a queue line to a theme park ride, it was nicely set out. Further along, and as you walk to the end of the path, it all opens out to a huge public area. The pool is beautiful covered by the main thatched roof of the main building, it has a nice bar by the pool and past this, you then have the lovely beach. At this end of the lodge, and partly above the pool, there is a huge raised level housing a games room, TV room, large open lounge area, and then restaurant which all looked very wooden, but comfortable.

For me it did lack atmosphere and character but to be fair, it was off season so very quiet everywhere and the hotel is very new.
