Africa House Hotel
is located in Stonetown
on the west coast of Zanzibar Island
off the Indian Ocean Coast
Back in colonial days this rather grand building was known as The English Club and served primarily as a watering hole for expats, as well as providing a few rooms for the accommodation of members.
In more recent times the building has continued to serve a similar function, with its bar terrace being a popular meeting place for sundowners.
Despite the building having been extensively renovated in 2008, the accommodation side remains very much a sideshow, largely because of the reportedly poor levels of service. The second floor dining room is very pleasant, as are the old rooms. Rooms in the ugly extension under the bar terrace are far less attractive.
Africa House Hotel is not somewhere that we presently recommend for accommodation, although the building itself is worth taking a look at ... on the way to the bar.
