Lake Magadi is the most southerly of the Rift Valley lakes in Kenya.

This is a very hostile but striking environment, a caustic soda lake populated by flamingoes and home to a large industrial extraction plant.

To the west of the lake stands the impressive Nguruman Escarpment, at the foot of which some significant wildlife conservancies are surrounded by Maasai grazing lands.

Here lie some interesting accommodation options, the best of which are the upmarket Shompole Lodge and the more competitive Olaikar camp.

Above and beyond the escarpment to the west lie the Loita Hills, a remote upland area cloaked in sacred forests.

This fabulous and virtually untrodden area is where we operate the wonderful multiple night trek known as Loita Trail 4.
