Lake Magadi

...

... is the most southerly of the Rift Valley lakes of Southwest Kenya, seen here against the Nguruman Escarpment and the distant volcanoes of Ngorongoro across the border in Tanzania.

This is a very hostile but striking environment, a caustic soda lake populated by flamingoes but dominated by a large industrial extraction plant. This is Maasailand and the tradionally dressed local tribespeople provide a stark contrast with the modern industrial installations.

Shompole ...

is a conservancy a little further to the south, largely comprised of open savannah grasslands running up to the foot of the Nguruman Escarpment. It was established to protect the indigenous wildlife against increasing grazing pressure being exerted by Maasai stock and contains a couple of interesting lodge options ...

Shompole Lodge ... is an upmarket facility which sits at the heart of this conservancy and is usually accessed by light aircraft.

Olaikar Camp ... is a lower cost accommodation option which also has access to the wildlife of the conservancy.

The Loita Hills ...

rise above and beyond the escarpment to the west, creating a remote upland area cloaked in sacred forests, a fabulous and virtually untrodden area.

Loita Trail 4 ... is a wonderful multiple night trek for people who really want to get under the skin of this wonderful area.

The few visitors who do visit this very quiet area tend to stay for 3 to 5 nights, usually in combination with more popular Kenyan safari areas such as Maasai Mara, Meru, Samburu, as well as time down on the Kenya Coast.
