This western park of
Kaokaland is a extremely remote and wonderful part of the country. Here the desert landscapes are absolutely vast and the sense of utter wilderness is palpable. The only obvious signs of life are herds of oryx and small bands of semi-nomadic Himba tribespeople.
The area essentially comprises of two sweeping valleys running north to the Kunene river ...
To the west is the
Hartmann Valley, whose northern fringes along the Kunene are simply breathtaking, with huge dunefields plunging down towards the river, set against the dramatic black granite mountains of Angola. Here lie two of Africa's most iconic camps, the luxurious
Serra Cafema Camp and the much simpler
Kunene Camp. Or you can access this area on one of our
Kaokaland Expeditions.
To the east is the
Marienfluss, which may not have quite the same drama, but is nonetheless also an utterly mesmerising place. Here lies the luxurious
Okahirongo River Camp and the much more basic
Camp Syncro.
