Balule Reserve is located in the Kruger area of northeast South Africa.

Situated to the north of the town of Hoedspruit, this reserve extends for an impressive 225 square kilometres of gently undulating Lowveld acacia scrub, dissected by the seasonal Oliphants river. There are no fences between here and the main reserve, ensuring that Balule is part of the greater Kruger ecosystem.

This is an up and coming reserve, an agglomeration of many smaller plots. Although many fences have been removed, the residual network of roads and telegraph poles does give it a slightly surburban feel in parts. A good deal of rewildification is still needed.

It does however contains a full range of wildlife, although game-viewing is definitely not as easy as in other more premium reserves.

Lodges here are very competitively priced compared with those on other better established reserves.

The most luxurious is undoubtedly Pondoro Game Lodge, with Ezulwini Billy's Lodge representing another decent option.

In a very low price range, Toro Yaka Bush Lodge and Drifters Game Lodge are two of the most economical safari lodges in the region and generate pretty reliable feedback.
