Matemwe Lodge is located in the village of Matemwe on the northeast coast of Zanzibar.
Previously known as Matemwe Bungalows, this lodge was one of the first on Zanzibar back in the 1980's. Set up on a coral outcrop and with commanding views of the stunning beach and lagoon, the lodge has evolved over the years from a pretty shaggy affair into a rather elegant and discreet place, with twelve impressive seafront bungalows set up above the water and backed by wonderful secluded gardens.
And the best diving on Zanzibar is just offshore at Mnemba Atoll, with kitesurfing, sailing and snorkelling also available.
Matemwe Lodge is one of the best small hotels on the island, somewhere we genuinely love and a natural combination with the better small safari lodges on the mainland. But it is better suited to a more outdoorsy type of guest ... when the tide is high the surf can slam into the rocks in front of the rooms, creating cool but salty haze.
