Tembo House Hotel is located in Stonetown on the west coast of Zanzibar.
Up until the construction of the Zanzibar Serena Inn in 2002, this was the flagship hotel here in Stonetown.
Its location on the waterfront close to the palaces is excellent and the converted merchant's house which contained the original hotel is of considerable architectural significance.
The addition of a substantial new wing and pool in 2003 detracted greatly from the character of the place.
Tembo House Hotel really does feel rather tired these days, especially now that there are so many other places to choose from.
On the other hand, it is cheap for a hotel in such a wonderful position and it is the only one with direct beach access. The two suite rooms at the front of the old wing are still our favourites.
