Zanzibar Serena Inn is located in Stonetown on the west coast of Zanzibar.
Created back in 2002 by the imaginative conversion of a number of older buildings in this prime location at the tip of the Shangani peninsular, this hotel feels surprisingly authentic for a facility of its size.
In contrast to the crazy hubbub of most of the old town, the hotel is set on a quiet shady square and once inside provides an oasis of calm.
The eighty rooms are mostly rather small and bland, although the seaview suites do have wonderful balconies.
A real highlight is the central pool area, which is certainly the best in town and enables guests to relax in between expeditions into town. The bar and restaurant are pleasant enough.
Zanzibar Serena Inn is by far the easiest place to stay in what is a rather challenging environment for a lot of visitors. Prices are relatively high, but worth it if you want to limit your exposure.
