Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge is located on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania.
One of a chain of large ex-government motel lodges, this place came into private ownership some years ago and underwent a major facelift in 2009.
The drive-thru entrance leads into cavernous public areas behind a huge picture window out to the crater itself. Cubic bedrooms are rather bland to say the least, whilst concrete terraces equipped with coin-operated binoculars are reminiscent of a 1970's ski-lodge.
Guests here tend to be on a lower cost packaged safari around other similar facilities.
Although we do find ourselves strangely attracted to the retro aspect and greatly appreciate the very friendly staff at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, ultimately we find ourselves rarely including it in a safari. We do however remain perfectly willing and able to do so.
