Serengeti is the mother of all parks.

The area is best known for its enormous herbivore migration, led by over a million zebra and wildebeest, a vast voracious lawnmower which in turn provides sustenance for a glut of predators.

But Serengeti is more than that. For example July thru September, when the migration is way off to the north, central areas experience the highest density of lion and cheetah in Africa.

Unsurprisingly Serengeti does experience high visitor traffic, which tends to cluster around core areas. But the area is vast and with careful planning it remains relatively easy to avoid the crowds and have a truly superb wilderness experience.

Choosing when to visit and where to stay requires an understanding of the migration and other seasonal patterns.

Take a look at the guidebook to discover which areas are best for each season.
