Apoka Lodge

...

... is located in the Kidepo Valley National Park area of northern Uganda.

Set in the westerly Narus Valley in this extremely remote reserve up on the northern border with Sudan, this high-end lodge is almost always accessed by light aircraft.

From its commanding position, comfortable public areas lead out to a decent swimming pool. The ten large guest suites each have private verandahs and outside baths. At the top of camp there is a lookout tower from which lion, elephant, buffalo and other game can often be spotted.

Safari is by vehicle and on foot, plus night vehicle safaris and visits to local Karamajong villages.

When to visit ...

The best time to visit Kidepo is usually during the late dry season Dec/Mar, when wildlife migrates into the park in search of water, with large gatherings of buffalo and elephant in particular.

In the converse Apr/Nov season rain can make access extremely difficult, wildlife can migrate out of the reserve and the grass can get very long, which can make game-viewing a little more difficult.

A few words about prices ...

We are specialists in helping our guests to build the very best and most suitable safaris for the lowest possible prices. A safari can be a very expensive undertaking and we always do everything we can to meet your target budget.

Further up this page you will see our guide price for this place. This is the high season rate per person per night sharing a double room. For most people this should represent a worst case scenario, since various discounts usually apply at other times of year.

We guarantee that the prices we charge will be the same or, more often than not, considerably less than if you were to book directly with the owner. We also guarantee to match or beat any legitimate competitive quotations. Additionally, all our itineraries have fully itemised pricing, so that you can see exactly how much each element costs, which should provide you with great reassurance and help you to make decisions when fine-tuning your trip.

How we like to include this lodge in trips ...

Kidepo Valley is one of those mystical safari locations which tends to appeal most to experienced safari travellers who are specifically searching out the wildest and most remote places. Even many of us here at ATR, whose job it is to know about such things, have not yet been there.

But we find it comforting to know that there are still safari areas which remain so far off the radar, even we only tend to arrange only a handful of trips here each year.

The area can be accessed by light aircraft from Entebbe, with small plane flights usually heading up north twice each week. The majority of visitors therefore tend to stay 3 or 4 nights, very occasionally 7 nights.

Apoka Lodge is one of the holy grails of safari, the kind of remote and little-visited place to which experienced safari travellers are naturally attracted.

Kidepo Valley is most commonly visited in combination with the more popular areas of Uganda, including Bwindi Forest, Queen Elizabeth and Kibale Forest, all way off to the southwest. These Uganda trips usually hub out of Entebbe, with combinations typically extending over 7 to 14 nights.

The area is also commonly combined with Tanzania, most notably for safari in Serengeti and Ngorongoro, a trek on Mount Kilimanjaro and time down on the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia.

It is also possible to combine Uganda with other countries across Africa, although the connections tend to be less smooth.
