Survivor's Song : Mark and Delia Owens : ATR rating : 9/10

Survivor's Song by Mark and Delia Owens

Having been banished from Botswana for exposing the environmental disaster of the cattle fences during the early 1980's, documented in their fabulous first book Cry of the Kalahari, Mark and Delia travelled north in search of a new wilderness in which to study animals. Ultimately they ended up in North Luangwa, a true wilderness and very much backwater, even more so than it is now. But they arrived at the height of the poaching epidemic, with elephant in particular being targeted. They had two to three years to save the park. What follows is a dramatic adventure, which really recaptures the issues of the time. Not only is this essential reading, but the book continues to serve as a reminder of how quickly poaching can take hold, become institutionalised and lead to the complete destruction of vast and critical ecosystems. Gripping stuff.

This book is also published under the name The Eye of the Elephant.
