Shiwa Ngandu

... is located in the North Luangwa area of northeast Zambia.

Situated 65km to the northwest of North Luangwa National Park, this remarkable place, made famous in the book 'The Africa House' by Christina Lamb, was built in the 1920's by eccentric British army officer Stewart Gore-Browne.

This country house, which would be more at home an English home country, sits in the middle of a large rural estate in the middle of nowhere.

Recently restored to its former glory by his descendants and open to paying guests, the place now finds itself serving as the hub of a modest local economy.

How we like to include this lodge in trips ...

Shiwa Ngandu is a very interesting and unusual place to include in a Zambian safari, with a uniquely British house-party atmosphere. Guests are able to ride, swim and visit local communities, in a real change of pace from the more usual wildlife viewing activities elsewhere.

Access is usually by light aircraft charter from either North Luangwa or South Luangwa national parks.
