is located in the Eastern
region of Madagascar
The town of Ambositra (pronounced "amboostra") lies on the RN7 around 200km south of the capital Antananarivo
and has a population of around 30,000 people. It is a major centre for woodcarvers, with many of the houses having ornate features and with plenty of figures and marquetry on sale on the streets.
The town is set across a string of small hills in a broad highland valley, with the old town centre being encircled by a ring road upon which most of the main hotels can be found.
Most visitors pass straight through the town and there is no recommended accommodation, even the architecturally impressive Grand Hotel d'Ambositra
having seen a serious decline.
The area to the south of the town is home to the Zafimaniry people, who are skilled wood-carvers and whose villages are particularly scenic. Out in this rural district Sous Le Soleil de Mada
functions as a reasonable base for walks and treks amongst these villages.
The RN7 continues south into the Ranomafana
