Ambre Nature Lodge
is located in the Diego Suarez
area in the Northern
region of Madagascar
Set in the small military town of Joffreville, this pleasant small lodge is one of the best bases from which to explore the Montagne d'Ambre National Reserve.
The lodge is centred on a large main building with extensive lounge and dining areas, with broad verandas look out over pleasant gardens of mango and litchi trees to the surrounding hills.
Guest accommodation is in 12 pleasant wooden cabins, set up on decks and under thatch, nicely spaced in the grounds.
Activities include guided walks into the reserve to experience the areas wonderful endemic flora and fauna, including several species of lemur, the world's smallest chameleon, a wide range of birds and some stunning rare orchids.
Access is by road, usually as a stop on the overland journey from Nosy Be to Diego Suarez. The usual stay duration is one or two nights only.
The main potential downsides at Ambre Nature Lodge are the difficulty of access, the shortage of availability, the chance that the staff may not speak any English (French is the main language here), the outdoorsy and subtle nature of the activities, with the main animals being relatively elusive.
