Amukela Game Lodge
is located in the Balule Reserve in the Kruger area to the Northeast of South Africa.

+ large private reserve
+ important conservation project
+ full range of wildlife
+ open to the Kruger National Park
+ medium quality lodge
+ owner hosted
+ low visitor traffic
+ off road driving
+ walking safari

Set to the northwest of the reserve, this simple little place is owned and hosted by Dutch couple Miriam and Corn van Dongen. Simple public areas overlook a small waterhole and include a modest pool. Guest accommodation is in four simple rondavels. The lodge is mainly aimed at self-drivers, but also offers a full range of pay as you go safari services, with traversing rights over 45 square kilometres.

- partially fenced reserve
- proximity to human habitation
- proximity to neighbouring lodges
- private residences on the reserve
- only accessible from the main R40 road
- basic facilities
- reclaimed farmland
- not particularly wild
- rather tame and over-managed
- lacks game density

One downside is that the Balule Reserve as a whole does not really feel like pristine wilderness, it being the aggregation of many smaller private plots.

Amukela Game Lodge is a reasonable lower cost stopover for self-drivers, but not necessarily somewhere worth travelling half way around the world to visit.
