is the most easily accessible part of the southern coastline of Mozambique, the town of Vilanculos having direct flight connections with both Kruger National Park and Johannesburg. The area natural contains some of the best beach lodges in the country. We divide it into five distinct areas ...

Benguerra Island is the more southerly of the two main islands in the area and really is a prime location. Measuring around 7km in length by 4km in width, most of the island comprises open coastal scrub, the eastern side being dominated by large dune-fields, whilst the western shoreline has more conventional palm-lined beaches, with fringing reefs and lagoons around much of the perimeter. The island hosts some top quality lodges, making it the number one tropical beach location to combine with the higher quality safari lodges across the southern part of the continent, notably Kruger National Park in South Africa and the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

Benguerra Lodge ... is a very high quality option set in a sweeping bay on the northwest coast, with just a dozen guest rooms.

Azura Beach Lodge ... is a similarly high quality offering a littler further to the south and slightly larger, with around 14 guest rooms and a number of larger private villas.

Bazaruto Island, at 30km in length by 5km, is the largest island in the archipelago. It too is comprised open scrubland, the eastern side being dominated by large dune-fields, whilst the western shoreline has more conventional palm-lined beaches, with fringing reefs and lagoons around much of the perimeter. However the lodge options here are not to the same elevated standards.

Anantana Bazaruto Island Resort ... is a relatively large and upscale facility offering a host of really high quality activities.

Linene is a peninsular of land situated around 30km southwest of the town of Vilanculos. It is a relatively remote spot with little human habitation. The landscape is flat, with low coastal forest and open scrubland to the centre, dune-fields and fringing lagoons to the ocean side and mangrove forest to the western lagoon side, large parts of which are designated as a nature reserve.

Dugong Beach Lodge ... is a really pleasant and relatively upmarket option set on the inland side of the peninsular and also offering a good range of activities.

Inhassoro is the stretch of coastline that runs for 20km to the north of Vilanculos to the town of the same name and then a further 30km to the end of a remote peninsular. The shoreline is essentially one continuous beach, backed by palm trees, occasional light agriculture and very little human habitation. Towards the top of the peninsular, the inland areas become increasingly dominated by mangrove forests. On the inland side, protected from the ocean and facing the lagoon are a couple of small lodges.

Rio Azul Lodge ... is a relatively high quality accommodation option which is considerably lower cost than the majority of those out on the islands.

Vilanculos is a considerably coastal town and the location of the main airport for the region, which has direct connections with both Johannesburg and Kruger. It is a relatively bustling place, but not enormously attractive by local standards. The town contains a broad selection of lower cost accommodation options which can be combined with more remote beach options if you want to get a little bit of local colour, visit the local markets and that kind of thing.

Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel ... is a pleasant ocean front lodge on the back of the main beach.

Casa Rex ... is a long established lodge in an elevated position above the main beach.

Santorini ... is a new and relatively chic lodge situated in a quieter positions just to the north of town.
