is located in southern Malawi
and is the commercial capital and largest city in the country with a population of nearly two million people.
Founded in 1876 by missionaries representing the Church of Scotland, named after the town with the same name in Scotland, Blantyre lies within the Shire Highlands surrounded by several mountain peaks and rolling hills, and has one of the most pleasant climates in the country.
Remarkably Blantyre attained municipal status in 1895, which makes it older than Nairobi, Harare and Johannesburg. It really was a major centre back in the early Colonial Period.
The city holds little of interest for the majority of international travellers, who tend to pass directly through on the way to the nearby areas of Mount Mulanje
and the Zomba Plateau
