Bwindi Forest

... in Uganda, along with the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda, are the two prime locations in Africa for tracking mountain gorillas.

At just 330 square kilometres, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is a very modestly sized reserve, an island of forest surrounded on all sides by intense small-scale agriculture.

Remarkably this tiny portion of the planet hosts almost half of the world's wild mountain gorillas, with 400 individuals in 20 troops. This rich rainforest environment also contains over 120 mammal and 350 bird species.

Of these 20 troops, 9 are habituated to the presence of humans, which means that they can usually be approached without being scared off. Only 72 gorilla tracking permits are issued each day, so you need to book extremely early and pay up front to secure a spot to visit one of the more interesting and accessible gorilla families.
