Changuu Island Resort
is located in the Stonetown North
area on the west coast of Zanzibar Island
off the Indian Ocean Coast
Situated 5km offshore from Stonetown, this interesting little island used to serve as a quarantine location for ships suspects of carrying infectious diseases.
Later the buildings were converted into a small prison and more recently into a sanctuary for giant tortoises.
The tip of the island has a nice little beach, the remainder being surrounded by coral rag cliffs, whilst within the tropical forest lies a network of mysterious rock pools.
Unfortunately Changuu Island really is rather too close to the busy harbour of Stonetown to offer the kind of remoteness that one usually associated with a tropical island escape.
The new lodge here was opened in 2008, has 15 rooms and is claimed to be five star. To our shame we are yet to pay a visit.
