is located in the Msambweni
area of the Kenya Coast
Although being situated only around 25km south of the heavily touristed stretch of the coastline up at Diani Beach, Msambweni is another world, a gorgeous stretch of white sand, backed by dirt tracks through pleasant traditional villages. The plots along the back of the beach are mostly empty, with a few containing the holiday homes of up-country Kenyans and just a couple with small and upmarket beach lodges.
Situated on the main beach about 2km south of the village, this private house rental offers can only be booked in its entirety by private groups of up to eight guests in four bedrooms. Essentially self-catering, the house comes with a full complement of staff including cook, askari and cleaner. Often used by larger groups as an annex to the adjacent Samawati House
, which has a further four bedrooms.
Activities include walking around the villages, remote beaches and mangrove forests of the area, plus snorkelling, paddle-boarding, body boarding and kayaking offshore. Day trips further afield are available for excellent diving, snorkelling and swimming with dolphins in the Kisite Marine Reserve to the south, plus golf. kite-surfing, wind-surfing, sky-diving and other such facilities back in the Diani Beach area to the north.
The main potential downsides are that the house and the hosting are both very simple, making it is best suited to more experienced and independent Africa travellers who will be able to take control of arranging activities with providers around the village and beyond.
