Cornerstone Guesthouse

... is located in the town of Swakopmund in the Western region of Namibia.

Upsides ...

Set just to the south of the town centre, this simple suburban guest-house provides modest accommodation in just seven rooms but elevated and reliable levels of service. There is a very wide range of activities in the area.

Downsides ...

The main potential downsides are that the lodge is quite simple and the attractions of the town may prove a little elusive for some people, especially given the potential exposure to strong winds and thick fogs.

When to visit ...

This coastline is relatively unseasonal and really can be visited at any time of year.

May/Nov ... is the dry season in this area, so there is virtually no chance of encountering any rainfall at all or even any cloud for that matter, although immediately along the coast you can expect the perennial morning fogs and high winds.

Dec/Apr ... is notionally the green season in this region, although in this particular area the chances of encountering any rainfall at all is extremely low. Having said that, the odd shower can really transform the landscape and cause wildlife to converge from a huge dry hinterland. The biggest issue for travellers is the chance of encountering rivers which have been swollen by rainfall further inland, making fording difficult, although these floods tend to subside after just a few hours. Again immediately along the coast you can expect the perennial morning fogs and high winds.

How we like to include this lodge in trips ...

The majority of self-drive trips to Namibia come through this Walvis Bay and Swakopmund area at some point. Although we are not enormous fans of the area, we do end up including it in a relatively high proportion of self-drive trips.

Cornerstone Guesthouse is one of our default options here, especially in more economical trips, it is friendly and reliable.

We usually recommend spending at least two nights here in order to be able to include a day on a guided trip to the more remote areas to the south of Walvis Bay, most notably to Sandwich Harbour where the enormous sand dunes of the Namib desert plunge directly into the Atlantic Ocean.
