Dar es Salaam
is the largest city and primary economic centre and transport hub of Tanzania, but not its political capital, that honour is reserved for the inland city of Dodoma.

The old town is set around a large harbour and is a classically chaotic African melting pot of industry and commerce.

Set back from that is a relatively pleasant if a rather hectic old town, with a grid pattern of stores, offices and government buildings.

Slightly more relaxed suburbs containing the embassies, government offices and hotels are generally located to the north, whilst the airport is way out to the west amidst the enormous sprawling shanty towns.
