Deception Valley Lodge
is located in the Central Kalahari
area of Botswana
It is set just outside the northern border of the reserve, confusingly around 75km north-west of the actual Deception Valley safari area.
The lodge itself is centred on a substantial thatched main building with a cosy lounge, pub and dining room, leading to an outdoor lounge and dining area, plus a decent pool, looking out over an artificial waterhole.
Guest accommodation is in eight large chalets, accessed by ground-level pathways and with private bathrooms. An additional large building, known as the Kalahari Manor, can function as a completely independent two bedroom annexe.
Children of all ages are accepted when booking the Kalahari Manor annexe. For the remainder of the lodge the usual minimum child age is 12 years. Children 8-11 are accepted but a private safari vehicle has to be booked at significant additional cost. Younger children can only be accommodated with a whole camp booking. The camp is not specifically geared up for children, is unfenced and could be potentially very dangerous. Adult supervision is essential at all times. Although the staff and guides will naturally try to tailor the experience to suit all guests, there are no special facilities for children, who are obliged to behave with due consideration for other guests.
In terms of activities, being located outside the park provides certain advantages, notably the ability to drive off-road and at night and the Bushman interaction here is refreshingly relaxed and enjoyable, a real highlight. The general safari guiding is also to a very high standard.
Until 2009 Deception Valley Lodge was the undisputed accommodation of choice in this unusual safari area. Unfortunately the emergence of two new lodges deep within the park, Kalahari Plains Camp
and Tau Pan Camp
, has drastically reduced the appeal of this place.SeasonsPricesTrips
