Delta Dunes Lodge
, also known as Tana Delta Camp
, is located on the Tana Delta
section of the Kenya Coast
The Tana Delta is a remote, little-visited and particularly interesting section of the coast. The Tana River itself rises on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya and creates a ribbon of green across five hundred kilometres of otherwise parched and largely empty semi-desert towards the coast, where it fans out into an impressive mangrove delta fringed by high sand dunes. Around 80km upstream from the coast lies the Tana River Primate Reserve, a relatively small area of protected riverine forest which is home to a broad range of wildlife including a couple of very rare endemic primates.
Set high above the river amongst the enormous sand dunes, doum palm forests and mangrove swamps, Delta Dunes Lodge is a lovely rustic chic lodge, the ultimate coastal hideaway. From the boat landing a rude path leads up to a reception and lounge area and on to a pleasant swimming pool, climbing to a further lounge and dining area on top of the dunes. Guest accommodation is in just seven rustic but lovely detached bandas, all of which benefit from the cooling sea breezes. Hosting is really elegant and sensitive.
Activities include guided nature walks, boat trips both along the river and out on the ocean, surfing, wake-boarding, kayaking and snorkelling, plus some very cool sand-sailing on the beach.
The main potential downsides are the difficulty of access, the fact that the beach is not as conventionally beautiful as others on this coast and that there is no diving. Some people may find the lodge itself to be a little too rustic and outdoorsy.SeasonsPrices
