East London

... is located around 250km east of Port Elizabeth in the Sunshine Coast East area of the Eastern Cape in South Africa.

The second largest town in the Eastern Cape, East London is essentially an industrial town, with a reasonably pleasant beach-front, pretty areas around the river inlet and a few upmarket suburbs, surrounded by industrial quarters and swathes of lower cost housing.

This area used to be known to the local Khoikhoi people as 'The Place of Buffaloes', after the huge herds that used to inhabit the plains along the river. But by the time the British had established the port as part of their campaign to subjugate the Xhosa people, the animals had been wiped out by white hunters.

We are very rarely asked to include East London in trips. It simply does not have the allure of so many wonderful locations here in the Eastern Cape and further afield.

Occasionally it is necessary to connect via the airport here, but it is very rarely necessary to spend the night here in order to make those connections.

Meander Inn ... is a decent overnight when connecting to flights.
