El Karama Ranch
previously known as El Karama Eco Lodge
, is located in the Laikipia South
area of north-central Kenya
The ranch is situated some 42km north-west of the town of Nanyuki, neighbouring the Segera and Ol Jogi conservancies, to the north of the better known Ol Pejeta area. It extends over a relatively modest 56 square kilometres. Regular wildlife sightings regularly include elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, African wild dogs, Grevy's zebras and gerenuks.
The camp itself is a pleasant affair, well presented, nicely hosted and keenly priced. It has public areas looking out over the Ewaso Njiro River and a modest swimming pool. Guest accommodation is in six stone and thatch bungalows, two of which are family units. The camp is very proud of its environmental credentials and is run completely on solar power.
Activities are centred on vehicle safari and walking safari in the local area, with horse-back safari, bivouac camping, bush picnics and village visits also being possible.
The main potential downsides are the relatively simple accommodation and the lack of a sense of wilderness due to the proximity of the heavily settled areas around Nanyuki and the fact that this is largely reclaimed farmland.
