is located in the Meru
area of east-central Kenya
Meru is an important national reserve which contains some lovely semi-desert landscapes and unusual animal sightings. It also experiences relatively low visitor numbers.
Wonderfully situated on a prominent hill in the heart of the reserve, Elsa's Kopje is an iconic camp, famed for being one of the locations in the legendary movie "Born Free".
From the reception it is a short walk up to the open-sided lounge and dining area, with a small spa and swimming pool beyond. Guest accommodation is in six lovely stone and thatched guest cottages, plus thee additional larger honeymoon suites and a private house with two bedrooms, separate dining, lounge and pool facilities.
Activities are centred on vehicle safari, walking safari and bush meals within the reserve. Further afield day trips to Kora National Reserve and various cultural visits are also possible.
The main potential downsides are that, being a very arid location, Meru has much lower wildlife densities than better watered reserves. There is also significant poaching pressure. The fact that off-road driving is not permitted inside the reserve means that it can be difficult to make the most of important sightings.PricesTrips
