The southeastern corner

... of Madagascar feels very remote from the rest of the country, the main roads to it having long since fallen into disrepair. It therefore sees much less visitor traffic.

Flying into the town of Fort Dauphin, also known as Toalagnaro, the main attraction are the small gallery and spiny forest reserves about four hours by road to the west.

The best known of these is Berenty Lodge, although this small reserve is definitely a victim of its own success, with high visitor numbers and relatively simple accommodation.

Far more attractive is the upmarket Mandrare River Camp, which provides guests with a remarkable range of wildlife and cultural experiences from a lovely safari-style base.

A couple of hours the other side of Fort Dauphin lies the Sainte Luce Bay area, where tropical forest meets white sand beaches and inland lagoons. Here the superb Manafiafy Lodge is one of the finest coastal retreats in the country.

The mountainous forest reserve of Andohahela is generally off limits at the moment.

If you need to stay in Fort Dauphin in order to make flight connections, then the Hotel Lavasoa is perhaps the most pleasant option.
