Golden Gate

... is located in the Central region of South Africa.

This area takes in the eastern portion of what is sometimes referred to as 'The Highlands Route', which follows the R26 along the northern edge of Lesotho.

Golden Gate National Park is a small but scenically impressive park with some good short walks and a longer 2 night trek.

Clarens is by far the most attractive town on the route and a nice place to stay on a first or last night of a trip since it is an easy 4 hour run from Johannesburg airport.

Fouriesburg is another town along the route, most significant for lying at the foot of the road up into Lesotho North.

Unfortunately there seems to be very little high quality accommodation in the area.
