Hotel des Thermes
is located in the town of Antsirabe
in the Eastern
region of Madagascar
This magnificent spa hotel would not look out of place in the grand avenues of Paris or Versailles. Built during the colonial period to take advantage of the supposedly healing waters of the local hot springs, there is no other building in the country which can rival this architecturally.
Following independence this grand old lady of a hotel staggered on for decades, as the building slowly fell apart and levels of service also declined. Even so it remained a wonderfully quirky place to stay.
Unfortunately the hotel finally came to the end of its long run, closing down in 2013. Hopefully one day someone will be rich and foolhardy enough to refurbish and reopen it.
