is located in the Kilombero
area in the southern
region of Tanzania
Remotely situated on the south side of the Kibasira Wetland, this old German mission station continues to survive and provide religious sustenance to the village. In truth the place is falling apart from lack of funds, although the present incumbent is making a good fist of getting things moving again.
The mission welcomes guests, although facilities are basic to say the least ... we purchased our own mosquito nets on the way through Ifakara and there was no running water at all. But the experience of dining with the fathers at the long refectory table is a real privilege and waking up to the glorious sound of hymns coming from the church really is wonderful.
In terms of activities, the reasons to wander so far off the beaten track are rather subtle ... to visit a remote farmstead, have a drink in the village bar, explore the wetlands ...
Itete Mission is an incredibly authentic African experience for experienced and hardy travellers. If you want to include this kind of truly extraordinary experience in your trip then better get directly in touch with us, we don't even have sample trips with this in.
