Joy's Camp

... is located in Shaba National Reserve in the Central Region of Kenya.

This camp is presently closed, but we expect it to reopen soon, with a new guide training facility alongside.

Shaba National Reserve is a small but important national conservation area to the east of the main North Road, around 100km north of Mount Kenya. The reserve contains some very pretty landscapes, especially along the Ewaso Ngiro River and offers chances of some unusual animals such as imperial zebras, gerenuks, reticulated giraffes and Somali ostriches. The reserve experiences very low visitor numbers, especially compared with the very busy Samburu National Park, just the other side of the main road.

Joy's Camp is a very lovely small lodge and famously, was the location for the tented home of Joy Adamson, author of the very famous book "Born Free".

Activities include vehicle safari and walking safari, with possibilities for various cultural interactions.

The main potential downsides are the low animal densities, the heavy poaching pressure, severe encroachment by livestock and poor park management. We also have some little niggles with the design of the rooms.
