Kambi ya Tembo

... also known as Elerai Tented Camp, is located in the West Kilimanjaro area of Northeast Tanzania.

Upsides ...

Kambi ya Tembo is a comfortable permanent tented lodge in a hilltop setting in West Kilimanjaro, a remote and little-visited safari area most famous for its views over Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a very pleasant and earthy camp, with fourteen guest tents and relatively well priced. Activities include vehicle safari, treks onto the Shira Plateau and cultural interaction with the local Maasai people.

Downsides ...

The main potential downsides at Kambi ya Tembo are that this area is too peripheral for most people, it has quite low wildlife densities, especially during the dry season and some parts are mixed use with domestic stock and Maasai villages.

A few words about prices ...

We are specialists in helping our guests to build the very best and most suitable safaris for the lowest possible prices. A safari can be a very expensive undertaking and we always do everything we can to meet your target budget.

Further up this page you will see our guide price for Kambi ya Tembo. This is the high season rate per person per night sharing a double room. For most people this should represent a worst case scenario, since various discounts usually apply at other times of year.

We guarantee that the prices we charge will be the same or, more often than not, considerably less than if you were to book directly with the owner. We also guarantee to match or beat any legitimate competitive quotations. Additionally, all our itineraries have fully itemised pricing, so that you can see exactly how much each element costs, which should provide you with great reassurance and help you to make decisions when fine-tuning your trip.

How we like to include Kambi ya Tembo in trips ...

West Kilimanjaro is a really interesting area, but one which we tend to recommend relatively rarely. For the vast majority of visitors, by the time we have included a sufficient number of nights in the main safari areas of Serengeti and Ngorongoro, there is very rarely sufficient time or budget remaining.

We tend to include it most in trips for experienced travellers who are deliberately seeking out new and unusual locations.Kambi Ya Tembo is a really decent little place, with great views of Kilimanjaro and a relatively attractive price. We generally recommend the considerably more expensive Shumata Camp in this area, as we feel that it is better located and has a more comprehensive range of high quality activities. But if that is too pricey, which it often is, then this camp is a more than adequate alternative.

As we mentioned above, this is a very niche location. We would love to send more guests, but bookings are few and far between. From a conservation perspective, it is critical that we make these more marginal areas start to pay. We can't keep pumping more and more visitors into the same old honey pots. So if you are able to fit this area into your trip, you can do so in the knowledge that you are really making a positive contribution to the conservation of the immediate area.

We most commonly recommend it to repeat visitors, people who have been on safari before and who will really appreciate the very low visitor numbers and the subtle attractions of the place.

Usual stay duration is 3 to 4 nights.

Those few people who do visit this West Kilimanjaro area often do so in combination with Mount Kilimanjaro treks. Other little-visited attractions in this region include Arusha National Park safari, Mkomazi safari and Usambara Mountains safari.

Many people visiting Tanzania Northeast also combine with the adjacent Tanzania North region, including Serengeti safari, Ngorongoro safari, Tarangire safari and Lake Manyara safari.

Some visitors also combine with options further afield including Ruaha safari and Selous safari to the south of the country, Katavi safari and Mahale Mountains chimpanzee safari out west, Maasai Mara safari over the border in Kenya and Virunga Mountains gorilla safari over in Rwanda.

These mainland areas are also commonly combined with nights down on the Tanzania Coast, especially on Zanzibar Island, Pemba Island, Mafia Island or Fanjove Island, usually in trips of 10 to 21 nights.
