Kapama River Lodge
is located in the Kapama Reserve
in the Kruger
area to the Northeast
of South Africa
Situated to the northeast of the reserve, Kapama River Lodge is a actually the largest lodge in all of the Kruger private reserves, having a remarkable 64 suite rooms in a range of different specifications. Extensive facilities include lounge, bar, restaurant and pool, plus a very extensive and popular wellness centre. The service levels are reasonably high and prices are extremely keen.
Activities include vehicle and walking safaris, access to elephant walking safari at the nearby Camp Jabulani
, plus visits to the nearby Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. Wildlife viewing in this Kapama area is reliable year round, since it is fully fenced.
The main potential downsides relate to this Kapama Reserve, which is fully fenced and very much detached from the rest of Kruger. We also find that the proximity of Hoedspruit Airport, plus the presence of fence lines, overhead telephone cables and road signs do detract significantly from the sense of wilderness, even more so here than in other parts of Kruger. The reserve also has quite a high visitor density.
Another clear downside is the difficulty in generating an authentic safari atmosphere in a place as large as this. As with all lodges in the area, there is the potential for adverse weather conditions Nov/Mar. Also, as with almost all the lodges in this area, different groups of guests are joined together on safari activities, unless you pre-book a private vehicle at significant additional cost.
