Situated on the 90 square kilometre Kariega fenced reserve on the Boesmans River, 8km inland from the seaside village of Kenton on Sea. It contains a mix of landscapes which are truly beautiful, but polluted in parts by the presence of fences, nearby farms and a main road which cuts right through the middle. There is a good range of wildlife, including free-roaming rhinos, elephants and lions.
This particular lodge is the largest and lowest cost. In an impressive hilltop setting, the large public areas contain a pool, gym and spa, whilst the dozen or so cabins with up to three bedrooms in each.
Activities include vehicle safari, walking, cycling, boating and canoeing, as well as boat trips down to the beach at Kenton-on-Sea.
- fenced reserve
- proximity to human habitation
- only accessible from the main road
- reclaimed farmland
- large corporate feel
- high visitor traffic
- crossing the main road whilst on game drive
- several access gates within the park
Kariega Main Lodge is a little large, but it does represent a relatively low cost option for a private reserve of this stature.
