Kariega River Lodge
is located in the Sunshine Coast
area of the Eastern Cape
region of South Africa
+ large private reserve
+ riverside location
+ full range of wildlife
+ good pool
+ family riverside rooms
+ wellness centre
+ walking safari
+ boat cruises to the beach
Situated on the 90 square kilometre Kariega fenced reserve on the Boesmans River, 8km inland from the seaside village of Kenton on Sea. It contains a mix of landscapes which are truly beautiful, but polluted in parts by the presence of fences, nearby farms and a main road which cuts right through the middle. There is a good range of wildlife, including free-roaming rhinos, elephants and lions.
Set alongside the river in the prime western sector of the reserve, this relatively upmarket lodge has large public areas, a nice pool and ten suites split across three separate buildings.
Activities include vehicle safari, walking, cycling, boating and canoeing, as well as boat trips down to the beach at Kenton-on-Sea.
- fenced reserve
- proximity to human habitation
- only accessible from the main road
- reclaimed farmland
- large corporate feel
- high visitor traffic
- crossing the main road whilst on game drive
- several access gates within the park
Kariega River Lodge is the flagship camp on this reserve. Certainly its situation is lovely, but if were up to us we would rebuild the rooms as detached river front chalets. With a minimum age of 10 years, is primarily aimed at couples.
