Khwai Adventurer Camp

... previously known as Banoka Mobile Camp, is located in the Okavango Khwai River area of the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana.

+ private concession area
+ pleasantly simple small camp
+ high levels of service
+ features mainly in set-itinerary group safaris

Khwai Adventurer Camp is a beautifully simple place which will appeal most to safari traditionalists and more outdoorsy folks.

The camp is situated on a private concession area to the north of the bridge over the river Khwai. It is a mobile camp, so is only deployed when needed. The camp is centred on a simple mess tent with a small lounge and dining area, leading out to a campfire. Guest accommodation is in just five large dome tents with private bathrooms.

Activities include vehicle safari, mokoro safari, motorboat safari, walking safari and night vehicle safari. The flood tends to arrive relatively late here and have relatively little impact on the safari activities in the camp. But some limited motorboat safari and mokoro safari should be possible year round. The main activity is vehicle safari, for which it is usually necessary to head down into the public access areas of Moremi National Park. Game-viewing is usually at its best Jun/Oct. Walking safari is relatively limited. In fact the camp describes it as 'nature walking', which implies that they are not looking to approach larger animals. It is also not guaranteed to be available, because there may not be a suitably qualified guide in camp. Night vehicle safari is limited to the concession area around camp and tends to be relatively modest. It is also possible to visit Khwai village.

- rarely available for private tailor-made trips
- wildlife viewing difficult in concession area
- usually need to enter busy public access areas for safari

The Khwai Concession, on which the camp is located, has only recently be converted from hunting to photographic safari, so the wildlife here is thin on the ground and relatively skittish. This situation will improve over time, but for the foreseeable future it will remain necessary to head down into the park for more reliable sightings.

Consequently, for the time being, guests may need to exit the concession and head out into the potentially busy public access areas back down at Khwai Bridge. During high season, Jun/Oct, this public access area can be a real mess, with lots of traffic emanating from several lodges and a major public campground in this area. Outside this period the area can be relatively free from traffic and the negative impact can be relatively light.
