Okavango Khwai Village
, also known as NG19, is a safari area located to the north-east of the Okavango Delta
in northern Botswana
To the east of the village and airstrip there are several camps situated in small private plots along the north bank of the Khwai River, where the landscape is a lovely blend of riverine forest and open grasslands, backing onto the mopane forest. The area is usually very strong for wildlife, notably in the Jun/Oct dry season.
But this area is famously the most busy and most chaotically run of all the private safari areas in the country, a real nightmare for traffic, with a plethora of accommodation options and vast campgrounds.
We therefore tend to recommend against staying in this area, although we do occasionally visit during the quieter hours from lodges remotely located in the much higher quality Khwai Private Reserve
immediately to the west.
Accommodation options include ...Machaba Camp
... is a really nice little place, very well presented and serviced.Little Machaba Camp
... is a smaller annex of the above camp and slightly higher in price.Khwai Tented Camp
... is pleasant option, also renowned for the quality of its safari guiding, but a rather simpler in build and closer to the village and airstrip.Khwai River Lodge
... is a much larger and rather old-fashioned lodge which somehow manages to command premium prices despite the clear disadvantages of its position.Sango Safari Camp
... is a much simpler and lower cost option set very close to the village and run by the local community.Tsaro Elephant Lodge
... is a simple old place which has recently been refurbished.
