is located in the Watamu
area of the Kenya Coast
Unlike nearby Malindi
, Watamu itself is much more of a village than a town, with a scattering of small shops and a reasonably hassle free environment. The coast is largely lined by sweeping white sand beaches, whilst just to the south lies the scenic Mida Creek with its mysterious mangrove forests. Offshore lies an extensive system of reefs, which provide some of the best diving in the region.
Until relatively recently Watamu was considered to be a place to avoid the crowds, with a large number of private house rentals providing pleasantly low key accommodation. But in recent years there has been considerable development and the place now has its share of large beach resorts, almost all of which are offering very low rates in an attempt to attract visitors.
Situated on the sweeping cove just to the south of the town centre, Kikapu Cottages is a rather pleasant place on an unusually large an open plot. It comprises two houses and the whole thing can only be rented in its entirety by private groups of up to 14 guests. The main house has four bedrooms, whilst the second house has two bedrooms. There is communal lounge space towards the front of the property, backed by a decent swimming pool and with views out directly over the beach. The property comes with a full complement of staff.
Activities include diving, snorkelling, inter-tidal walks, spa treatments and visits to various historic sites in the area.
The main potential downsides are the aforementioned shortcomings of the area, the fact that the place can only be rented out in its entirety and that a private house rental in this area is inherently best suited to very independent people who are familiar with travelling in the more challenging parts of Africa.
