Kilwa Ruins Lodge
is located in the Kilwa
area of the Indian Ocean Coast
of eastern Tanzania
Set on the town beach, this place has for a long time enjoyed the reputation of being the leading lodge in the Kilwa area.
However at the time of our last visit the place was showing serious signs of decline. The local staff were cheery and helpful, but the levels of service on offer were not ultimately very impressive. We had to spend an hour shopping for parts and then overseeing various fundis repair the windows and mosquito nets in our rooms before we could get on with our day.
The game fishing operation for which the lodge was once so well known seems to have also ground to a standstill, although there was a couple of chaps from South Africa there apparently trying to remedy the situation.
Kilwa Ruins Lodge is a pretty basic affair, still one of the better places to stay in Kilwa, but that really is not saying very much.
These coastal areas are most commonly combined with Tanzania safari
options such as Serengeti safari
, Ngorongoro safari
, Ruaha safari
and Selous safari
, as well as Kilimanjaro treks
, usually in trips of 10 to 21 nights.
