is located on the Garden Route
, some 440km east of Cape Town
in the Western Cape
of South Africa
This place is geographically rather special ... a huge lagoon separated from the ocean by a dramatic cleft known as The Heads and surrounded by beautiful verdant hills.
Unusually the main N2 highway passes right through the centre of the old town, rather detracting from its appeal, although quaint back streets to the north give a hint of how lovely this place must have once been.
The lagoon frontage has been developed out of all recognition in recent decades, with enormous waterfront developments detracting from the natural attractiveness of the situation. Further development around the town and out onto The Heads leaves the whole place with an increasingly suburban if reasonably upmarket feeling. Historically the reasons to stop here have been to walk the forests and sail the lagoon, although nature lovers presumably prefer somewhere a little less developed to use as a base these days.
If you are looking for a decent beach then probably best to head on east towards Nature's Valley
or Plettenberg Bay
.Falcon's View Manor
... is one of the better options, set in a colonial house high above the old town.
