Laikipia West

... covers the western side of the Laikipia Plateau in the north-central area of Kenya, lying above the Rift Valley lakes of Baringo and Bogoria.

The area is dominated by Mukutan, an enormous private ranch owned by Kuki Gallmann, author of the book "I dreamed of Africa".

As late as the 1980's this area was a functioning cattle ranch, after which the owners removed the cattle in order to turn the land over to wildlife. Unfortunately the species to take first advantage was the leleshwa plant, which has expanded to turn this once largely open range into a vast impenetrable thicket. There is game here, but finding it is virtually impossible.

Mukutan has some really interesting accommodation, but with the drawbacks of the location, these are generally only visited by guests who have a burning desire to meet Kuki herself, although this is by no means guaranteed.

Mukutan Retreat ... is the best established lodge on the conservancy, perched above a steep valley to the northeast.

Mukutan Kurumakine ... is arguably an even more stylish lodge set to the southwest of the conservancy and has broad views to the west.

The area is most commonly combined by air with higher quality locations around Kenya such as the Masai Mara, Meru, Laikipia North and Chyulu Hills areas.
