is a large body of water which straddles the border between western Rwanda
and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a very low key way the lake is the riviera of Rwanda
. Surrounded by forested hills, with sandy bays and fishing villages, residents of Kigali
travel here for relaxed long weekends.
The substantial town of Gisenyi lies at the northern end of the lake, against the DRC border, across which the town of Goma forms the other half of a larger urban area. There are lodges on the lakeshore here and at Ribona in the next bay to the south, the best of which is probably the Lake Kivu Serena
But when travelling between Virunga Mountains
, it is the much more relaxed town of Kibuye half way down the lake which represents a more natural place to break the journey, with the pleasant Cormoran Lodge
being the usual first choice.
It is possible to travel by boat from Gisenyi southwards, but this tends to be quite expensive and bypasses the more attractive sections of road around the northeastern shoreline.
