Situated on top of the rift valley escarpment above Lake Manyara, this place is used to be part of a chain of large government hotels, but is now in private hands.
It is essentially a 1960's Los Angeles style motel, complete with parquet floor, giant chess and around a hundred rooms with cardboard walls and sliding glass doors. The main difference is its remarkable setting on top of a sheer escarpment above the park.
The safari world has moved on and left Lake Manyara Hotel as something of a time capsule, despite recent makeovers.
Although we do find ourselves being strangely attracted to the place, the bottom line is that we only tend to include it in trips extremely rarely, maybe for a very large corporate group or during the off season when prices can become irresistibly low.
