Lake Natron Camp
, previously known as Ngare Sero Natron Camp
, is located in the Lake Natron
area of Northern Tanzania
+ situated in the fabulous Lake Natron area
+ some of the most magnificent scenery in East Africa
+ hiking the active volcano Ol Donyo Lengai
+ viewing the flamingos on Lake Natron
+ swimming in waterfalls
+ interesting camp concept
- a tough overland journey
- relatively simple facilities
- exposed location
The open plains between Lake Natron and Oldonyo Lengai are extremely exposed to biting dust storms and pizza-oven winds ... really not an obvious place to put a camp.
This innovative facility takes on the elements head on by taking the form of a 'desert combat' camp, with large geodesic tents providing the shelter. The resulting camp seems both innovative and exciting.
Public areas are pleasant enough, looking out over an unusually verdant patch of grassland. The guest tents are less impressive, being rather rudimentary affairs compared with the covers under which they sit. But ultimately the biggest negative remains the degree of exposure to the elements.
The camp is now owned by our old friend Ake Lindstrom and has been completely rebuilt in more conventional safari style as you can see in these images.
A few of our guests are sufficiently excited by Ngare Sero Natron Camp to include it in their safari, but the majority head for the simpler but perhaps ultimately more habitable Lake Natron Tented Camp
