Lake Victoria North

... is the section of the lake which lies offshore from the cities of Entebbe, Kampala and Jinja in central Uganda.

At 250km diameter, Lake Victoria is the world's second largest freshwater body by surface area. This northern section of this vast lake is notable for a number of easily accessible islands, some of which have accommodation options.

Although there are two interesting accommodation options in this area, both of which are on islands accessed by motorboat from Entebbe, we rarely find ourselves being asked to include them in trips.

Ngamba Island ... is a tiny one square kilometre island situated 20km south-east of Entebbe which serves as a chimpanzee sanctuary. There is overnight accommodation here, but we more commonly recommend it as a day-trip.

Pineapple Bay Resort ... is a relatively high quality beach lodge set on the two square kilometre Bulago Island, also around 15km south-east of Entebbe.

Lake Victoria North is most commonly combined with other popular areas of Uganda including Bwindi Forest, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale Forest, Murchison Falls and the extremely remote Kidepo Valley.

Uganda trips usually hub out of Entebbe, about 3 to 4 hours away by road from Jinja, with combinations typically extending over 10 to 14 nights.

These trips are commonly combined with Tanzania, most notably for safari in Serengeti and Ngorongoro, a trek on Mount Kilimanjaro and time down on the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia.

It is also possible to combine Uganda with other countries across Africa, although the connections tend to be less smooth.
